This pattern is named in honor of Rino
Bratelli, a former president of the Salty Flyrodders of New York and an
all-around good fisherman. Rino refined this pattern with inspiration
from noted West Coast fly fisherman Dan Blanton. Originally developed
for striped bass on Long Island, I have successfully used this pattern
for a variety of fish including blues, jacks, spanish mackerel and
snappers. The key to the pattern is the high intensity color and lots of
flash that drives predatory fish wild! It is best fished on a quick
"stop-and-go" style strip that allows the fly to bounce and
flutter as it is retrieved. Expect hits most often as the fly sinks
between strips. The blue style often works better on a cloudy/rainy day.
